How It Works
The upscaler uses ESRGAN super-resolution neural networks (via UpscalerJS + TensorFlow.js) running directly in your browser. How neural upscaling reconstructs detail
OptiPix runs Real-ESRGAN, a super-resolution network trained on millions of paired low/high-resolution images, directly in your browser. Unlike interpolation (bicubic, Lanczos) which can only smooth existing pixels, the network hallucinates plausible high-frequency detail - edges, texture, hair - learned from its training distribution.
Three model sizes (slim, medium, thick) trade speed for fidelity, at 2x and 4x scale factors. The model weights download once and are cached; inference uses WebGPU on supporting browsers and falls back to WebAssembly elsewhere. A 512px image upscales 4x in seconds on a recent GPU.
Upscaling works best on clean sources: photos, game art, and illustrations. Heavily JPEG-compressed inputs should be denoised first since the network will faithfully enlarge compression blocks too. For old family photos, upscale before printing - 4x turns a 800x600 scan into print-ready 3200x2400.
